Super Powers #5

The Super Powers fight a crazy Prym-El controlled by Brainiac who in turn is controlled by Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom, who now works for Darkseid of Apocalypse. Darkseid wants to invade the Earth and Prym-El’s confusion and goals of conquest gives him all the time and resources that he needs to attack while the heroes are busy. But Golden Pharaoh, Firestorm, and Hawkman are in Gotham holding the line. Will they be enough?
A lot happens in this episode. Baltazar draws heavily on DC Comics’s lore and I’m not sure that new readers with little experience with DC Comics will understand everything they read. Baltazar does not speak down to kids. But at the same time, he refers to the heroes as Super Friends, and the Justice League in a book called Super Powers. This may get confusing for new readers. Similarly, though he introduced the character previously, Prym-El can confuse readers with less knowledge of this history. I know that I still don’t understand why Superman’s parents are alive and living on an alternate Krypton.
The art is as dynamic as ever and this the part of the story which is very easy to follow. It is cartoon art but it’s quite suited to the story. This story would be taken more seriously if the artwork was more realistic, although with realistic art, perhaps the problems in the pacing would be too much to ignore. It seems that this series is not an ongoing one as I was hoping. That’s too bad.
