John Constantine and the gang must stop Dog Welder from contacting his family and then rush to Egypt and fight off some mummies. Dog Welder, according to Constantine, has things to learn about his mystical powers.
The comics continues its weird satire into the mystical world of super heroes and blatant grossness. What intrigued me is why giving John Constantine so much space in this comic and why is wearing that astronaut helmet and surfing a surf like the Silver Surfer? His presence changes the comic and gives less focus to the regular cast. Unless, of course, Constantine is meant to be a cast member too.
In any case, Garth Ennis does not explain anything about the character’s current get up or much about the others. This is the problem with this comic book series. It is too much a comic for the initiated who has read about these characters in the past.
The dark humour is fun but I worry about the pacing of this mini-series. Only this issue do the heroes finally go on their quest for whatever it is they seek to find. The real conflict of this series is still unknown, unless it is the attempt to give Dog Welder a redemption.
Russ Braun’s work continues to be wacky and crisp at the same time. I like the energy in his work. He can do super heroics but also wacky comedies featuring regular people and backyard swimming pools. The cover is by the late Steve Dillon. Always a pleasure to see his work grace some comic. For years he was only within the pages while Glenn Fabry drew the cover all of his
Hellblazer comics.
