Shadowpact # 11

The Shadowpact, with some new recruits, goes to Hell-- but for a good cause. To stop Etrigan, the Demon, from taking over. The result is an entertaining tale with lots of action, some clever use of superpowers and good plot twists. Partly, this should be credited to the team of Derenick and Faucher who give a sense of dynamism and movement to the story while keeping all the characters recognizable and distinct. The characterizations however don't really come off the comic well. The newly-introduced members-- the cowboy, the sexy girl, the spooky guy-- aren't too memorable. Additionally, the story is too lightweight. It trivializes Hell, making it just another dimension full of ugly monsters rather than the metaphysically-frightening place of final judgement that Gaiman and Alan Moore have depicted before. Actually, for all the talk about how frightening and dark the Shadowpact's world is, this book comes off as just another superhero title with magic being used instead of science. Even the art style would be better suited for "the Avengers" or "JLA" rather than a mystery book. The Shadowpact needs to find something that would set it apart from all the long-underwear teams out there. Just the same, I would give this issue three out of five stars.
