In the latest issue, Mystery, Inc. teams up with the Justice Society of America, thanks to a little time traveling with Dr. Fate. When a mysterious time capsule is opened in present day, it unleashes a horde of nether-worldly demons intent on destroying the Washington Monument. Recognizing the supernatural elements, the Scoobies are willing (well, most of them) to step in and resolve the crisis.

Enter Dr. Fate, who informs our team that the solution lies in the past, and transports them back to the 1940s, where they meet the Justice Society: Flash, Green Lantern, Atom, Wonder Woman, Black Canary, Wildcat, Sandman, Dr. Fate and Jonny Thunder. Plus a special surprise JSA-er whose presence I refuse to spoil.

It’s a fun story, sure to please fans of the Golden Age heroes, or those of us that recall their annual team-up with the JLA in the 1970s. It touches on a handful of clichés seen in such WW II material, such as why Nazi saboteurs speak with such thick accents, a sure giveaway they’re up to no good.

One might think teaming the Scoobies with the JSA to be a challenge, but Fisch makes it look easy. Clearly, he enjoys his work and has a great deal of fun writing such stories. It’s a shame we haven’t seen what he could do with one of DC’s high profile titles, but then again, maybe not. He has the luxury of being able to fly under the radar of DC editorial, free from the constraints of continuity and marketing ploys.
