Sam Alexander, the 15 year-old super hero known as Nova visits the Watcher to ask him what exactly he watches. But as he arrives, the Nova’s helmet alerts him to a great danger. Will the Watcher give Nova his answers before it is too late?
This issue serves as a prologue to introduce the Watcher to Marvel Comics readers that may not be familiar with him. It shows his history and what he watches. It also serves as a quick reintroduction of Nova. Writer Mark Waid does not include too much of the intrigue that will guide the Original Sin mini-series. Waid shows that the original sin happened when the Watcher’s race gave advanced technology to an alien race. But that race wasn't ready for it and destroyed itself. The concept of original sin has a biblical theme to it. It is of course about knowledge and the foolishness of having so much when one is not ready to.
Cheung is great here. What I like about this issue is how the art of inking matters. Several inkers worked on this comic book. Many comic books publishers no longer have their comics inked. I think it is a loss. The shadow and contrasts in this issue alone show that good colouring is not always the answer to creating mood and ambience in a comic. This comic book is not necessary to follow Original Sin but fun nonetheless.
