Nightwing The New Order #5

Superman and Lex Luthor are back and ready to help Nightwing and the Titans, but Dick Grayson decides to betray his allies to stop his son from being used as an experiment that can restore the powers of super heroes. Will this give Bette Kane and her Crusaders the edge they needed to stop the Titans?

This is the penultimate chapter before the big finale and all the players have been assembled. It’s a good thing that this story is narrated from the point of view of Jake Grayson because his father, Dick Grayson is of questionable character and this is good. This is chapter five of the story and it still feels like much is missing. If I compare this story with the Golden Age mini-series from 25 years ago, this would be but one chapter and one twist in the former’s narrative. Although Kyle Higgins packs his story, it still feels shallow in parts.

I do like how Jake Grayson resents the mother who abandoned him and his own opposition to his father. This is where Higgins shines. However, on the big picture part of the meaning of the power wipe on the entire planet, there are many gaps left wide open. A similar story with the Avengers Disassembled a decade ago really explored the effect of the “no more mutants” worlds uttered by the Scarlet Witch. There is no such depth here.

There have been many depictions of Superman fighting Batman. In this issue, there is but one full page spread that will send shivers down your spine as you witness Superman brutally burning Batman with his heat vision. Trevor McCarthy delivers the goods. That’s all I need to write.
