The Karma and Cannonball of the future manage to help the current timestream's New Mutants defeat the 'Locktech infected Doug Ramsey of the future, thus heading off the horrific future revealed by Karma and Cannoball...at least temporarily... in the action heavy conclusion to "Fear the Future."

Enjoy it while you can New Mutants fans...for Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning's run on the book, and the book itself, is soon to be concluded. It's an absolute shame, as I stated in my review of New Mutants #45, because New Mutants is the only book that is really telling stories that actualize Xavier's Dream. This team of X-Men are living the dream, literally. They are independent members of society, who live alongside non-mutants, while battling to thwart the forces of evil. I've followed these characters since the mid-1980s and will hate to see them split up once again and regulated to second level players in the other X-Books. No other X-Book showcases or focuses on the type of engaging storytelling that we were treated to during the 1980s New Mutants run. Apparently, no one wants to read X-stories like that...

Leandro Fernandez's art remains as crisp and engaging as ever. He hits all the right sequential art requirements every time out consistently. His background panels are still a little lacking in detail, but everything else to do with his style is exemplary.

At least we New Mutants fans are going to be treated to one more great looking arc with "Fight the Future" which begins on 8-15-12. After that where these great, and often overlooked, 2nd generation X-Men end up will be anybody's guess.

Rating: 8 /10
