For anyone who has ever been associated with an Otaku,
My Girl Friend’s a Geek should hit a chord of recognition. The series explores the effect extreme fans otherwise known as fanboys or fangirls can have on a common person.
Based on a series of blog posts that were transcribed into a bestselling novel series,
My Girlfriend’s a Geek relates the life of the mild mannered Taiga whose world is rocked when he falls for the rambunctious Yuiko. As a fan of anime, manga, and cosplay, Yuiko’s habits threaten to rub off on Taiga whose sober attitude tends to become disbelief when he finds himself dragged into her festivities.
Volume 2 features Yuiko introducing Taiga to fujoshi (roughly translated as rotten girl). From there you can get the picture of the awkwardness that ensues. Despite his concerns, Taiga seems to take it all in stride, doing his best to be a good boyfriend and appease his eccentric mate, while on the inside constantly questioning Yuiko’s interests.
My Girlfriend’s a Geek is a pleasant read that explores the Otaku culture of Japan. It’s a cute slice of life title that even non-manga readers whose acquaintances tend to be obsessed with anime and manga should enjoy.
