Mind MGMT #0 Review

Never before have I wanted to read (and re-read) a comic book as often as I have with Matt Kindt's Mind MGMT. Kindt writes a complex thriller about a journalist named Meru and her quest to uncover a secret organization called "Mind Management" that trains agents in the art of psychic warfare. If you have never picked up an issue before, go grab one. That being said, Issue #0 is an excellent jump on point.
The main characters are reintroduced and background information about the shadowy organization is revealed through three mini-stories. The first centers around a Russian psychic agent sent to take down Mind Management's top agent, the second focuses on Meru's investigative journalism that led her to uncover Mind Management, and the third is about an agent of Mind Management who was recruited in the early years of the organization.
Kindt's script is designed for the comic book medium and he uses it to its full potential. There are minute details placed throughout the issue that seem irrelevant at first (like a word scribbled on a piece of paper or a drawing in the sand), but then are revealed to have deeper meaning-- sometimes several issues later! It leaves the reader constantly wondering whether they should be paying attention to random things in the panels-- quite the paranoid feeling. I found myself thumbing back through each page to make sure I didn't miss anything (and concede knowing I probably did). The high level of detail showcases Kindt's craftsmanship and love for the medium.
The art is unlike any other comic book on the shelves. Kindt uses watercolors over pencils to make a unique presentation. The panels are simple and clean, the watercolors are muted and allow for interesting visual effects (keep an eye out for the "invisible man" panels). The result is charming and beautiful, never over the top and just enough detail to feel real.
Not only is Mind MGMT a pleasant read, it is a full on package. Each issue includes extra content on the covers and hidden codes that can unlock bonus features online- none of which Kindt plans on reproducing in the collected trade. So, did you buy your own copy yet? Seriously, get one digitally or go to a store and pick one up. You'll thank me later.
