love that DC Comics has updated the 100-page super-spectacular, featuring new
stories as well as reprints from the not too distant past. But when we at the
Bin receive our review copies, we are only offered the new stories. In the case
of Superman, no problem. But in the
case of Justice League, I have only a
Wonder Woman story to enjoy. Is it labeled Justice League because it features
solo stories of its members, or shouldn’t the lead story be a new JLA
adventure?
Regardless, the new Wonder Woman story sends Diana in search of Steve Trevor, who has gone missing in the course of an aircraft test. No trace remains, until Diana and Etta Candy (the new incarnation) find themselves in a freak storm and crash on what Jules Verne would describe as a mysterious island.
The story is by Palmiotti and Conner, late of having written Harley Quinn, which was sometimes illustrated by Chad Hardin. He’s a terrific artist, and clearly his drawing and the writing of Palmiotti and Conner are a well-made match. I’m generally not a huge fan of Wonder Woman, but in their capable hands, they may have more than a few converts on their hands.
I am hopeful this marketing strategy of putting placing these comics in WalMarts will pay off for DC. Not only does it reach a broader audience in areas where comic book stores may be few and far between, but it offer shoppers a greater value for their money. Mostly, I hope it reaches kids with less pocket money, that recall as I do the enjoyment of reading thicker, denser comic books.
