Review: Harley Quinn #38

Imagine my surprise to see a cover co-credited to Darwyn Cooke. I love his work, and regret that he left us far too soon. Yet somehow, for DC to lift an image from out of the slush pile seems self-serving. I wish they hadn’t.

But, it’s for a Harley Quinn book, so perhaps a tad disrespect is the order of the day. While Harley takes Manhattan, Coney Island is under assault by any number of Batman’s lesser villains. And by lesser, I’m referring mostly to those featured on the TV show – King Tut and Egghead, among others.

But Harley has her hands full, taking down a group of gorillas going ape at the top of the Empire State Building. Not actual gorillas, just guys in masks with names like Caesar, Magilla and Joe. The references are subtle but they’re there.

Art chores are split up, with Mirka Andolfo handling the Coney Island action, and Eleonora Carlini mostly illustrating the doings at the ESB. They’re two styles mesh well, without creating that jarring effect when there is a sudden change in artists from one page to another. I wish they could have been more exclusive to one scene or another, though.
