Review: Harley Quinn #34

This was a very satisfying issue. It’s very dense, filled with action, intrigue and humor, and for the first time a long time, I feel I got my money’s worth.

Harley and Ivy (and some supporting players whose names I never bothered to learn) are on a road trip to Florida when they get into a little trouble along the way. Stopping for a night of rest and to fill their bellies, they can’t pass up the opportunity to win their meal, courtesy of Clash o’ the Karaoke. But Ivy’s pulchritudeness incites bad behavior, leading to a few hours in the local hoosegow.

Then it’s on to Casa de Quinzel, and a visit with Harleen’s parents and three brothers. There appears to be a slight dialogue balloon mishap, but no doubt it will be fixed in time for the trade. The road trip then makes a slight detour to the home of scribes Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner (nice digs) before wrapping up off the sunny shores of Florida.

Artwork by John Timms is fabulous as always. A few panels I see a bit of Neal Adams influence, but I could be mistaken.

Then again, who HASN’T Neal Adams influenced. The Palmiotti/Conner sequence was drawn by Chad Hardin, who does excellent work. I’d like to see him on a regular book again real soon.

The issue of the supporting players whose names I never bothered to learn is addressed within the book, and perhaps future issues will see a slight reduction in cast. Meanwhile, new readers can look forward to Harley Quinn #35 being a good jumping on point.
