Ghost #3 Review
By J. Skyler
January 13, 2013 - 17:23
A villain by the name of Doctor October has captured the disgraced newsman Vaughn Barnes, one of Ghost's acquaintances (as it may be too soon for them to truly consider one another friends) and one of the two men who discovered her paranormal self and the strange device which pulled her through to the world of the living. In a stint of good old fashion villainous monologuing, October reveals the origin of the device, her connection to it and the demonic entity who hired her to solve its secrets (and who just so happens to be the mayor of Chicago). If you've ever watched Warner Bros.
The New Batman Adventures, Dr. October may remind you of Calendar Girl, the supermodel turned criminal after industry professional ostracized her for being too old in a youth driven market. October's self-confidence is clearly tied to her vanity, which has been robbed by her demonic boss/lover who betrayed and disfigured her. She intends to enact her revenge by having Barnes possessed by an entity from the other side and use him against her former employer and love interest.
Elsewhere, Ghost has finally learned the secret of her own identity: in life she was known as Elise Cameron, a news reporter who went missing after investigating a string of missing persons in Chicago. Finally able to recall a number of memories from her previous life, Ghost realizes her death and resurrection are tied to the mayor and decides it's time to take action against him.
Both Kelly Sue DeConnick and Phil Noto remain top-notch as writer and artist respectively in this issue, as they have been throughout this mini-series. That makes it all the more bittersweet this series will conclude with issue #4. If you've never read anything of
Ghost before, I recommend collecting DeConnick's run. It's definitely a must-read.
