In early October, registered participants will be required to compete in a set amount of games to qualify for the top 256 players to be placed in the main tournament. A single elimination tournament will be begin in November, whittling the numbers down to two semi-finalists, who will be sent to the 2009 NHL All-Star Game in Montreal to compete for the grand prize of being recognized with the 2K Sports Hockey Hall of Fame Championship Award, presented in the Hockey Hall of Fame itself.
2K Sports will also be presenting two additional awards to participants – the 2K Sports All-Around Offense Award and the 2K Sports All-Around Defense Award. All three awards will be represented by trophies that will live at the Hockey Hall of Fame in the exclusive 2K Sports NHL 2K9 Zone, and each winner will have their name engraved on their respective individual trophy. Winners will also see their names on virtual versions of the above trophies in next year’s NHL 2K10 .
