Detective Comics #961

In the first few pages the readers are treated to a flashback of many years earlier where a young Bruce Wayne is getting a magic demonstration by a younger Zatanna. They are interrupted by Zatanna's dad who makes some cryptic remarks basically boiling down to foreshadowing. Interesting part of the scene is Bruce as a teenager bumping into R'as all Ghul there. But then we jump cut to short present day interaction between Zatanna and Bruce, then the air and Azrael floating outside in The “heavensphere”.
Scene shifts again to a brainwashed Azrael fighting Batwing and Batwoman. Cassandra shows up to help but even she isn’t enough to tip the scales and things look dire until Zatanna teleports her and Batman there to take Azrael down.
The writing is solid, complex and multilayered with subplots supporting the main plot. In other words the kind of story writers have come to expect from Tynion IV. And the art omg. So brilliant and detailed Azrael looks totally badass and the rest of the art is just as stylized.
Rating: 7.5 /10
