Deathstroke #36
By Hervé St-Louis
October 21, 2018 - 13:44
This story picks up months after the one where Deathstroke was caught and sent to Arkham Asylum after his capture by Isherwood. Deathstroke has to attend counseling with the rest of Batman’s villains held in Arkham while he plots his way out. Has Deathstroke being proven to be crazy. Is he becoming crazy?
This storyline confused me at first because I had forgotten that six-months ago, Deathstroke had been captured. The creative team switched to the Batman storyline instead, possibly because Batman would no longer be available later as it turns out. It had to run first. The problem is that if it confuses someone who has read all issues of this series, it will confuse casual and new readers too.
That aside, Christopher Priest is enjoying himself here and even creating a character for himself that plays a role like the coyote in the Grant Morrison’s Animal Man. There is another inmate here who follows Slade Wilson and appears to know more about his predicament on a meta-level. Priest is also taking Deathstroke in the madness territory that has made the character’s more successful clone at Marvel Comics, Deadpool, a popular character. It is only fair as Deadpool stole so much from Deathstroke. Only a writer like Priest could pull this off, even though most of it is confusing, but that’s Priest for you.
I don’t care what the credits indicate but I could swear that M.D. Bright contributed to some of the early pages in this comic. He is not credited at all, but I recognize his work. Did M.D. Bright return to comic to draw a few pages with Priest, his old partner in crime?
