A lot happens this issue. It was over just as it began, with chaos and death and destruction. It’s not often I get to say it ended too quickly, but it bodes well for subsequent issues. I felt fully engaged in the story, only to have it come to a screeching half (for now).

And Batman makes it very clear, this is NOT a zombie story. This is about spreading anti-life, according to Darkseid’s agenda. It’s a Justice League story, with appearances from Harley Quinn, the Joker and assorted other non-JLA DCU residents. As I indicated, the story may actually live up to some of the hype.

Artists Trevor Hairsine and Stefano Gaudino seem to gel as a team in this issue, providing more solid visual storytelling than the previous chapter. If they can maintain that until the end, any concerns for the inaugural issue will diminish, and blend more effectively into the overall narrative.

It remains to be seen to what degree the events in this issue will have a long-lasting effect. I anticipate when the adventure is over, matters will return to the status quo. Pity that. The recent developments could truly be “a bold, new direction.”

Rating: 9/10
