DC KFC Comic #3

Colonel Sanders, the one and only founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken recruits Green Lantern Hal Jordan to help him distribute his Zinger chicken sandwich across the universe. But someone steals all the Zinger before they reach their destination. Can Colonel Sanders and Hal Jordan stop the thief and feed the rest of the universe?

There is no point making logical sense of this comic. It’s meant to be fun and it really is not meant to be taken seriously. It’s an updated version of all the Hostess comics from the 1970s that used super heroes in one-page inserts to promote Twinkies and other sugary items. This comic however, promotes more than salty chicken sandwiches. It proudly promotes capitalism and the quest of one colonel to sell and feed as many people with his chicken sandwiches. During the comic, this blatant promotional and capitalist ploy ridicules both the comic characters and the real Colonel Sanders in the quest to make a few bucks.

I really don’t mind DC Comics using its properties to promote other brands. It’s what good brands do. As I just mentioned, it’s not the first time that DC Comics does such things. It’s a tradition of sort for the publisher to have struggling brands associate with its characters. It’s just that here, the iconic and revered 1970 Green Lantern #76 cover has been again used (and should I say defaced) to sell chickens.

The artwork has that classic 1990s DC Comics look where the characters kind of had versions of their old costumes and were drawn simpler. The characters look stiff in places and the Colonel feels too built. But visually, it’s still a fun comic.

Now, what you probably wonder is will this comic want to make you eat some Zingers? Well, perhaps they could have shared a bit more about what makes this chicken sandwich so special. They could have replaced it with chicken thighs and it wouldn’t have affected the story much. If you’re going to go capitalist, do it all the way and tell us why your product is so special!
