Brightest Day # 15

The Martian Manhunter sees all his greatest dreams come true-- but it is all a lie.

This issue is devoted entirely to J'onn J'onzz, the Manhunter from Mars where we see him living his most heartfelt dream, but much like the classic Alan Moore Superman story, it soon all turns bad and we discover it is all a horrible trick.

Although we know how it ends, it is still fascinating to see the Martian Manhunter finally interacting with his own people, to see him truly happy for once, only to see his anguish as it all falls away. The art is suitably alien but is still familiar enough for us to empathise with J'onn and even with his (imaginary) fellow Martians.

There are a few gruesome scenes in this story, including the graphic death of several JLA members but for once, the killings serve a purpose beyond just frightening the reader.

Those who are following this miniseries for the other characters (Firestorm, Aquaman, etc.) or the main plotline with the White Lantern may be disappointed that this issue did not even touch on them. But the whole Mars subplot has been dragging a little too long with too many gory scenes included and it is good to see it is finally amounting to something.
