This issue is a transition issue into the first story new story arc since the relaunch of the series. It’s a critical moment to see if Simone can bridge the initial goodwill gained with the first story and make it a sustainable product that fans will comeback to for years. So far so good. We get a good view of the new compassionate Batman and we see the Birds having fun at a male stripper bar. There’s a lot to be told about the personality of each character when seeing the strippers. It’s the same type of brief moments that Simone would bring in her previous Birds of Prey series, making sure the characters interact with one another and spelling out their personalities. The only differences are that they used to do it over ramen. If the previous story was focused on Black Canary and her new arch nemesis the White Canary, this story is another rematch with an old adversary of Oracle. What I like in both this story and the previous one, is that Simone is not just reviving old plot points, she’s adding the to them with new characters and new challenges. That’s crucial to make the comic book avoid sounding like it’s relying on old stories and just retelling them with a new spin.
Syaf is a solid artist. However the inking by Cifuentes may not be the best match for his style. Syaf needs something cleaner and more solid to highlight the great lines and figures he weaves.
