Batwing #3

Batwing, bleeding to death internally, is fighting Massacre to the finish and has no chance of getting the upper hand. It may be his last fight, unless the Kingdom super hero thunder Fall intervenes for one last time.

This series is a sleeper hit. I really like the low key illustration of all these super heroes. Thunder Fall is just wearing a shirt and his powers, electrical in nature don’t seem all that marvellous, but it just fits with how I envision a story about African super heroes. This experiment by DC Comics should really be given more publicity. DC Comics is doing the same thing Marvel Comics did with Alpha Flight. They are basing a whole new super hero series in a real country but with rules and local references that seem legit. Although I’d agree that DC Comics’ job is more challenging as more research is needed to depict the Congo than what Canada. The fights are good, although Batwing who seems to be on the sides of this story again, is almost an omni-present narrator.

Oliver’s work takes a bit of adjustment to get used to, but it’s still kinetic although all painted. It’s as if he had made cuts out of airbrushed sections, cutting a clear line and using a lot of white space as a negative background. The lack of proper background is not much of a problem though, due to the well-done juxtaposition of painted elements and white space.
