Batgirl #13
By Paul Mason
August 2, 2017 - 15:09
This issue opens with seven year old Esme on the trail of a missing dog in an old warehouse. She is confronted by a gang, but of course saved by Batgirl who scares the gang away and gets the story of Rookie the firedog from Esme. It is not long before Catwoman shows up who also happens to be searching for a lost pet. They find the petnapper Velvet Tiger.
This is another filler issue between story arcs. And frankly full of fluff.
I have seen negative reviews, and heard negative reviews for this title since Rebirth. I never let those reviews affect my opinion and took them with a grain of salt. My rationale for going against the seeming consensus was a respect for what this iteration of Batgirl was and it’s target audience. I believe the powers that be at DC chose this title as one to appeal and increase sales in a younger female demographic and while I respect that I now honestly believe in the editors presumably directing the creative team to aim for that demographic they are hurting the title. Although the are was bright, fresh and good everything else about this comic was just plain silly.
