Axe Cop: President of the World #1 Review

If there is a creative endeavor that more beautifully captures the thoughts and feelings of being an imaginative child than Axe Cop, I haven’t found it. Hopefully, you know the story of Ethan and Malachai Nicolle. Ethan is the older brother (in his 30s) and the artistic muscle behind Axe Cop. The real magic comes from the fact that all of Axe Cop’s adventures are written by the much younger brother, Malachai (age 8). If you have never read one of AC’s adventures, check out their website and you can read a lot of content for free. Of course, Dark Horse was wise enough to sign the pair to a deal which allows them to release original comic book adventures in addition to their online content.

Axe Cop: President of the World picks up after the ending of Bad Guy Earth. But really, you don’t read Axe Cop for the narrative thrust or the plot developments. You read it to follow the amazing, funny and sometimes touching train of thought of Malachai. This issue alone has a Goo Cop, talking gorillas, Axeville and a million year wait for evil. And tons and tons of other ideas that could only come from a child’s mind. Ethan does a great job of translating his little brother’s ideas into a coherent format and bringing them to life. They really do make a good team. As a bonus, you get some insight into how a kid thinks about God, the president and Gorilla planets.

I wonder if this phenomenon doesn’t have a sell-by date when Malachai starts growing older and he loses touch with his childhood abilities to just create. Even if there is a time limit here, check it out while you can. It is pretty much undiluted awesome.
