The Avengers want to investigate Barbuda, the capital city of the A.I.M. Empire. The city s protected with a force field that neither Thor nor Hyperion can penetrate. Iron Man tries to recruit teleporter Manifold to go to the island with a small team. He wants to know what happened to the first team he sent there. But Manifold refuses to help the Avengers because he doesn’t trust his powers. Will Iron Man convince him?
This comic book is good looking. Caselli’s drawings are impeccable. He even makes Tony Stark look like Robert Downey Jr. What annoys me with this comic book is the slow pace of the story. There is not even a beginning of an intrigue or conflict in what the writers present. The plot in this issue, 20 years ago, would have been four pages. Stretching stories ridiculously started in the 2000s but now it is pointless. The detour with Manifold and Captain Universe is something Jim Starlin would have handled in one page. The story is so empty that Caselli often draws three panels per pages.
I don’t know who Manifold or Captain Universe are. I don’t know much about this comic book because the writers expect readers to know all the characters and what happened before. Although this comic book is gorgeous, I have no idea why someone cares about something so empty.
