The Avengers must protect the Negative Zone prison from an attack from Annihilus and his swarm of bugs. They want to break through the prison’s gate in order to travel to Earth. All that stands between the bugs and Earth are the Avengers and several villains from the prison recently released from their prison so they could help protect it with five Avengers and a few S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.
This was an interesting episode but like the previous one, I miss some of the epic characterization from the first season. The story seems more action-oriented than the first season. I was expecting a few double crossings from the released villains but none of that happened. Again Captain America proved very heroic by being willing to trap everyone in the Negative Zone forever if it proved the only solution to stop the swarm from crossing over to Earth.
I really liked seeing the Wasp in this episode. She’s always lively and fun to watch. I’ve missed a few episodes, so this was my first exposure to Miss Marvel with her powers. She’s really a straight shooter and a brilliant field commander. I can’t wait to see more of her and learn more about how her powers were interpreted in the cartoon series. All she does for now is shoot ray blasts at bad guys and fly. I liked how Captain America thought Baron Zemo was just to dangerous to be released from his cell and help defend the prison. Was it the Captain overreacting or was he right in distrusting the villain. Of course, the Leader turned out to be important in this episode and redeemed himself in the end. He’s not just a silly villain. I do have to ask why all the villains are still in costume, even the A.I.M. troops. That’s kind of silly. Maybe having missed so many episodes since season one, I just can’t quite connect into the ongoing narrative of this series, but it doesn’t feel as intense as it was last year. The animation and effects also seem cheaper and less elaborate.
