The original time displaced X-Men undergo a rigorous Danger Room training exercise under the tutelage of Prof. Kitty Pryde, which they woefully fail. Concurrently, Jean Grey continues to push the moral boundaries of her new found, and extremely powerful, psionic abilities. She is pretty harshly chided by Kitty for invading her mind uninvited and young Scott Summers vigorously demonstrates his aversion to Jean's actions when she does the same thing to him. She reveals a bit of information that is important though...Cyclops has been approached by Mystique...Meanwhile, Mystique and Victor Creed/Sabertooth engage in a little invasion of their own kind when they bust a former super villain ally out of a SHIELD holding facility...

Writer Brian M Bendis continues to plot one of the most interesting X-Men stories ever while bringing new depth and interest to the character of Jean Grey. Her actions are frightening as Kitty rightly observes, and one can't help but wonder if Jean is going manifest the Phoenix, once again, at some point near the end of Bendis' "time displaced original X-Men" story as a way to resolve it. It would seem like it would be too easy a resolution to the story, but The Phoenix can work wonders, as we've seen time and time again...

Stuart Immonen is at the top of his game here in All New X-Men. I remember his work from way back in the mid 1990s on various Superman titles, and I haven't enjoyed his work as much since then. I actually like it a good deal more now than then. It is crisp, clear, and powerfully kinetic. He packs lots and lots of detail into every panel and really does a great job of recreating the look of the original X-Men.

Still a great read nine issue in, All New X-Men is one of those rare X-titles that rises above the masses of mutant books from Marvel Comics in the quality department. It is truly worth the read.

Rating: 9 /10
