When
last we left the Man of Steel at the end of last issue, he had swooped down
into one of the lesser neighborhoods of Metropolis, where he confronted the
last person he expected to find – his wife, Lois Lane. Last he had seen of her,
she had left Earth to chaperone their son Jon on his journey with his
grandfather Jor-El.
As this issue picks up, Clark Kent is seen strolling into the Daily Planet, his encounter with Lois conveniently ignored. No answers, no explanation to the reader. All we know is that Lois is back on Earth, incognito, and without their son.
But Bendis throws his audience a bone by featuring Batman, as Superman sics him on a Planet reporter who’s gotten her hands on some kryptonite. Again, the whys and wherefores are not provided. I’d like to believe answers will be forthcoming, but given the lack of developments regarding Lois, I’m not optimistic.
Bendis’ arrival at DC reminds me of the early 1970s, when Jack Kirby transitioned over from Marvel. Within a few years, he rejoined Marvel, DC Comics leaving a bad taste in his mouth. It is my hope that Bendis’s tenure at DC is better received. I’m a little anxious for seeing some of his plotlines resolved, but your mileage may vary.
