Review: Action Comics #1010

Lois and Clark have gone undercover. Given Superman’s tendency for truth, it’s an awkward place for him to be, since the very premise behind “undercover” means lying. But he manages, at least until he can’t. Lois, she’s better at it than most.

Leviathan is taking out all the super-secret organizations in the DCU: DEO, Kobra, Argus. It doesn’t matter which side of the fence they’re on, they’ve all become targets of something bigger than most. A common suspicion is that Amanda Waller knows more than she’s telling. That’s okay. For now, she’s inside the Fortress of Solitude with nowhere to go.

It’s a fascinating take on the Man of Steel, one seldom explored as Clark is less of super-hero and more of super-spy. Perhaps it’s inspired by Henry Cavill’s roles in the Man From UNCLE or Mission Impossible: Fallout. That’s okay, I don’t mind. I can think of worse ideas.

I am enjoying Epting’s work. I may have said it before, that it reminds me of Jack Abel, and as most of you know, I am a big fan of retro. But Epting doesn’t merely imitate; he brings his own tools to the task and makes it his own. It can be a challenge, but Epting makes it look easy.
