In the absence of Superman, Batman and other big names, Firehawk
organizes a Justice League of her own but the first outing of this new
League, against time-displaced pirates and cyborgs, does not go well.
We learn more of Black Adam's agenda, discover what the Martian
Manhunter has been doing, and find out what happened to Checkmate in
the missing year. The mysteries behind the various conspiracies are
intriguing and the writers certainly know how to throw surprises at us.
Longtime DC Comics readers may also be excited about seeing old faces
like Atom Smasher and Ambush Bug brought back but compared to previous
weeks, this issue of "52" lacks a central core to make the story more
comprehensible and also more engaging. The art does not help much. The
scene of pirates appearing out of nowhere or superheroes popping up--
also out of nowhere, are poorly laid-out, making it difficult to tell
what is happening. The art in this issue is clearly intended to follow
the style of George Perez but the art team does not have Perez's skill
in drawing human figures or in doing crowd scenes. 5 out of 10 stars.
