Aquaman #35

Aquaman fights Murk the man who tried to murder him and left him for dead before the new king of Atlantis took over. Can they be allies against the power-hungry King Rath?

This storyline has endured too long by now. It was very interesting, but Dan Abnett has stretched and explored every corner now and there is nothing else to do or say. Can we end this? It does not help that King Rath transforms into Mumm-Ra this issue. What was once an intriguing political drama undersea with nod to the Trump presidency has become directionless as the Atlanteans continue to wage a long civil war. The strength of this comic, the many protagonists with their own agendas is now becoming a distraction as there is little development of Aquaman. I think Aquaman should play the super hero in the next storyline.à



Abnett’s run on Aquaman will be noteworthy if only because it has lated so long and also given Mera her own voice. He has always played with various elements showing us Aquaman as a super hero, a diplomat, a king, and now a rebel leader. I am not too sure which version of Aquaman is the more definitive in his run and what I will remember.  Will it be remembered for being a Game of Throne clone or an Aquaman that incorporates elements from every other version of the character?

I like Robson Rocha’s take on Aquaman and Atlantis. His figures feel real and have enough dramatic faces for a political drama. He can draw monsters and stuff crawling underwater well too. I may mock the Mumm-Ra-like Rath but the villain does look great!
